Wallops Coastal Data Acquisition and Archive Center
WaCOOL!
Welcome to NASA Wallops Flight Facility's Coastal Ocean Observation Laboratory (WaCOOL). WaCOOL is a key component of the Center for Innovative Technology's (CIT) Coastal Observations Program (CoastalObs). NOAA-funded, the CoastalObs program is a collaborative effort supported by CIT, NOAA, NASA/Wallops and various academic and commercial institutions. Our research focuses on the characteristics and biophysical processes of the coastal waters surrounding the Delmarva Peninsula (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia).
Announcements
CODAR Southern Mid-Atlantic Raw Velocities |
(05/18/2007 08:56 AM) |
New CODAR data are now available on the CODAAC website.
Rutgers University is creating a CODAR product for us which combines data from Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. The product is a plot of raw sea surface current velocities from CODAR SeaSonde radar sites along the coast. Both unaveraged hourly and average daily hourly products are available.
Institutions contributing to this product include Rutgers University, University of Delaware, NASA/Wallops and University of North Carolina.
Data are viewable from:

OASIS Platform Data |
(03/21/2007 11:33 AM) |
OASIS platform test data is now streaming in.
This includes data from sensors embedded on the platform and a view from the onboard camera.

2007 Valentine's Day Storm |
(02/14/2007 02:52 PM) |

A spectacular Rutgers University image of surface currents during the 2007 Valentine's Day storm. Data from the WaCOOL Assateague and Cedar Island CODAR installations were used in the creation of this image. More data are available at the following URL:

Mirrored MODIS-A Data Available |
(02/05/2007 03:01 PM) |
+ Mirrored MODIS-A SST and Chlorophyll
The CODAAC distributes original WaCOOL-generated data and mirrors selected datasets which we receive from other sources. These mirrored datasets are nominally subsets of data which are used in creating our own products or products which are particularly relevant to our region on interest.
The MODIS data sets consist of Aqua Level-3 4-km and 9-km standard-map files of Chlorophyll (CHLO), Angstrom coefficient (A531), Diffuse attenuation (K490), Normalized Water-Leaving Radiance at 551nm (L551), Aerosol optical thickness (T869) and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) in HDF format. The files are organized by binning period: i.e. Daily, 8-Day, Monthly, Annual and a special regional subset.

Cedar Island Producing Data |
(12/19/2006 09:24 PM) |
| We are now producing data from the Cedar Island CODAR site. The data still need to be tuned, but the site is looking good. |
Asssateague Contributes to Regional CODAR network |
(11/21/2006 07:52 AM) |
The SGT CODAAC team worked with the Rutgers COOLRoom to incorporate preliminary Assateague CODAR data into the Rutgers realtime dataset. Many thanks to all the SGT, EG&G, Rutgers, and CodarOS personnel who worked to troubleshoot the site and get us to this state. (These are preliminary products and all usual disclaimers apply.)
Assateague extends the dataset south of 38:30. The data are updated hourly at the Rutgers website:

Preliminary V2 KML Browser |
(11/21/2006 07:50 AM) |
A preliminary Version 2 KML data browser is now available. There is still significant work to do with regards to time-base browsing and the incorporation of additional datasets, but it is a significant improvement over the initial browser. New features include NOAA nautical charts, better view-dependent scaling (using superoverlays), more buoy locations, and realtime weather radar.

AIS data semi-live |
(09/27/2006 08:44 AM) |
| Test AIS browse products are now available for download. The process is not yet entirely automated, but things are coming together rapidly. |
New Pictures |
(09/27/2006 08:42 AM) |
| New pictures have been added to the Photo Albums. These includes screenshots of the v1 and beta v2 Google Earth browsers and photos of the CODAR site selection. |
OpenDAP Data Server |
(12/13/2005 10:28 AM) |
| An OpenDAP data server has been installed on this website. The initial dataset in an historical Freshwater Flux dataset. Please use the OpenDAP Data menu to access relevant data and metadata. |
